At the March PTA meeting the presentation focused on the summer learning programs through Fairfax County.  Click on the link or the picture to the left, to see the Power Point presentation -- or go directly to the FCPS Summer Programs website.

There were lots of good questions at the meeting -- including some that cleared up confusion about

transportation (students can get a bus at West Potomac High School for some programs held at Fairfax High School!).  Make sure to check out the program and get in touch with FCPS for more information.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE

PRINCIPAL SWOGER'S MESSAGE

03/23/2020

Dear Groveton Tigers,

This afternoon, the Governor of Virginia had to make the difficult decision to close school for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. I’m sure that this was not an easy decision and you are probably feeling just as heartbroken as we are. We can’t fully express how grateful we are for the outpouring of support we’ve received from all of you in the last few days. This is what makes our community truly exceptional. We have also received many generous offers of donations. Unfortunately at this time we cannot receive any donations at the school per FCPS guidelines.

We know that many of our students, families, and staff are working to pick up the pieces and find a new normal for the next few months. At this point we are still waiting on guidance from FCPS on next steps. We don’t have all the answers yet but we ask that you remain optimistic and we will continue to communicate as soon as we have more information.

We want to let you know that our staff will be reaching out to our families this week. The purpose of this communication is to check in on our students and let them know how much we miss them and that we are thinking of them.

While we are away from school please remember that

FCPS is providing free breakfast and lunch to all kids who are 18 years old and younger. Here is the link to the all the Grab and Go food distribution locations as well as meal bus routes:

To support students at this time, FCPS has developed centralized resources to promote continuity of learning, which can be accessed via FCPS 24-7 (http://fcps.blackboard.com). These activities are ready for families/students and do not require any teacher preparation or facilitation.

Here is how you can access Blackboard 24/7 for the upcoming weeks:

1. Go to the Groveton ES website: https://grovetones.fcps.edu/

2. At the top, look in the navy colored ribbon for the first link in white, “FCPS 24-7 Learning”.

3. Once you click FCPS 24-7 Learning, have your child log on with their school Username and Password.

4. On the left side, you will see a graphic.  Click on the "Elementary Resources."

5. If your child does not know his or her Username and Password, you can reset it here:

https://itweb.fcps.edu/accountrecovery/index.cfm

6. If your child’s password reset (above) doesn’t work, you can also log in using the Username and Password you use for your FCPS ParentVUE Account!

If you are going through your ParentVue Account, after you log in, scroll down to the “FCPS Links”, and click on “FCPS 24-7 Learning”.

In addition, you and your family can check out our Groveton Elementary PTA Facebook Page where many parents and teachers can post engaging activities and resources both digital and hands on to support your child at home. Simply go to our school website and click on the OUR PTA icon.

Every one of us has experienced a lot of change in the last few weeks, and there is probably more to come, and that is ok. But, it will also be an opportunity for all of us to discover our strengths. Our strengths as individuals, as families, as a school, as communities, and as a society.  I encourage all of us to discover our strengths and to use them to model a sense of calm, to care for one another, and to work together. By doing this, I am confident we will find the way forward.

Thank you for all that you do to support our students and the Groveton Community.

Sincerely,
Jim Swoger, Principal

Groveton ES

GRAB-AND-GO MEALS DURING SPRING BREAK WEEK

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will be serving grab and go meals during spring break, April 6-10.

Starting Monday, April 6, food distribution hours at FCPS school sites and curbside service sites will be from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Food distribution times at pop up sites and along bus routes are unchanged. Breakfast and lunch meals are available together wherever meals are being distributed.

View Complete List of Meal Sites and Times:

www.fcps.edu/news/coronavirus-update-food-resources

All FCPS students (regardless of age) are eligible for free grab and go breakfast and lunch, as well as other county children, under the age of 18. Adults picking up meals for children should let staff know how many children’s meals they need. Adult meals are $2.

Curbside meal pick-up stations are generally located in the bus lanes at the schools or in the kiss and ride area.  Look for the canopy tent along with Food and Nutrition Services staff, who will deliver meals directly to vehicles.

Walk-ups are still welcome at all sites. Walkers are asked to use school sidewalks to safely navigate their walk to the pick-up stations.

As a reminder, it is important to follow social distancing guidelines. Be sure to stand a minimum of 6 feet apart from others and practice regular hand washing, including prior to leaving a residence to pick-up meals, upon returning home, and before consuming food.

At our April 2019 meeting the evening presentation focused on huge strides made by Groveton administrators to get Level IV services at Groveton

Principal Swoger and Mr. Morris talked about how the new services - set to be implemented during the 2019-2020 school year - would give parents an alternative to Stratford Landing.  It would also mean that families in the Immersion Program would not have to choose between Immersion or a Level IV school.
